Who We Are

The Multifaith Media project is a cooperative effort between the Hartley Film Foundation and Auburn Theological Seminary’s Center for Multifaith Education.

The project is directed byJustus N. Baird of Auburn’s faculty and Josh Borkin, an experienced educator and current doctoral candidate at Teachers College- Columbia University. Stacy Smith, a graduate student at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and Jenna Tiitsman, a scholar who writes on religion and film and teaches at Hunter College, were also integral to the project.

The guidance of Teachers College - Columbia University professor Rene Cherow- O’Leary deserves special mention. The project began in its pilot stages with assistance from teachers who are currently part of the social studies department at Teachers College. These teachers gave of their time to test a select group of films and reflect on their use in the classroom. Since then, we have reached out to teachers across the country in college and high school settings. A number of their ideas and curricula can now be found on the project’s website.

We are also grateful for the work of the Center for Multifaith Education’s advisory board which consists of academics and religious leaders from Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain, Jewish, and other traditions.

To keep Multifaith Media alive fresh and relevant, we welcome input, suggestions, and essays from all educators who are working to increase religious understanding and expanding their students’ vision of the world with documentary film.
